Help and answers for صيام (Siyam)

Frequently Asked Questions About صيام (Siyam)

How do I log my first fast?

Open Siyam, choose your mode (Religious or Intermittent) the first time you launch, and you'll land on the Today screen. Tap the day's card to mark a fast as planned, in progress, or completed. You can also open the calendar and tap any past or upcoming day to log it.

What's the difference between Religious and Intermittent modes?

Religious mode is built around Ramadan and Sunnah fasts (Monday/Thursday, Ayyam al-Bid, Ashura, Arafa, Six of Shawwal, the first eight of Dhul-Hijja, plus voluntary days). Intermittent mode is built around time-restricted eating windows (16:8, 18:6, 20:4, OMAD). You can switch between them at any time from Settings — your data stays separated.

Which Sunnah fasts does Siyam recognize?

Siyam automatically detects: Mondays and Thursdays, Ayyam al-Bid (13, 14, 15 of every Hijri month), the day of Ashura (10 Muharram), the day of Arafa (9 Dhul-Hijja), the Six of Shawwal, and the first eight of Dhul-Hijja. It also clearly marks days when fasting is forbidden (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, Ayyam at-Tashreeq) or discouraged on its own (Friday alone, Saturday alone).

How are prayer times calculated?

Siyam uses the open-source Adhan library with the calculation method you choose in Settings — Umm al-Qura (default), Muslim World League, Egyptian, Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, North America, or Karachi — combined with your selected madhab (Shafi or Hanafi) and your location. All calculations happen on-device.

Why does Siyam ask for my location?

Location is used only to calculate accurate Suhoor, Imsak, Fajr, Maghrib, and Iftar times for your area. It is never transmitted to any server. If you prefer not to share your location, the app falls back to a default city (Makkah) and you can manually set a custom location in Settings.

What reminders can Siyam send?

All reminders are local and optional. You can enable any combination of:

  • Suhoor / Imsak reminder — a gentle nudge before Imsak so you can finish your meal in time.
  • Iftar reminder — fires shortly before Maghrib so you can prepare.
  • Maghrib adhan — plays the bundled adhan sound at Maghrib (optional).
  • Sunnah day reminder — a heads-up the evening before a recommended Sunnah day.

You can turn each one on or off independently in Settings.

Does Siyam play the adhan?

Yes — Siyam includes a bundled muezzin adhan audio file. It is used for the Maghrib notification by default and can optionally be used for Imsak and the pre-Iftar reminder. Audio plays through the iOS notification system, so it respects your device's silent / Do Not Disturb settings.

Is my fasting data private?

Yes. Every fast you log, every preference, your location coordinates, and your custom city all live only on your device. There is no account, no sign-in, and no cloud sync. We do not track you across other apps and fully comply with Apple's App Tracking Transparency framework.

Do I need an internet connection?

No. The core experience — Hijri calendar, prayer-time calculations, fasting log, reminders, and the adhan — works fully offline. An internet connection is only needed if you choose to view ads (which support development) or download future app updates.

The app crashes or has performance issues. What should I do?

If you're experiencing issues, try these steps:

  • Force-quit and restart the Siyam app
  • Make sure your device is running the latest version of iOS (17.0 or later required)
  • Check the App Store for any available updates
  • Restart your iPhone
  • If the issue persists, delete and reinstall the app — note that locally stored fasting data will be removed

Getting Started with صيام (Siyam)

Step 1: Download and Open

Download Siyam from the App Store. Open the app and pick a mode — Religious for Ramadan and Sunnah fasts, or Intermittent for IF protocols. You can switch later from Settings.

Step 2: Allow Notifications & Location (optional)

The first time you open Siyam it may ask for permission to send notifications (for Suhoor / Iftar / Adhan reminders) and to access your location (for accurate prayer times). Both are optional — the app still works without them, but you'll get the best experience with them on.

Step 3: Choose Your Calculation Method

Open Settings and pick the prayer-time calculation method that matches your community (Umm al-Qura, MWL, Egyptian, Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, North America, or Karachi) and your madhab (Shafi or Hanafi).

Step 4: Log Your Fasts

Tap Today to log the current day's fast, or open the calendar and tap any day. Sunnah days are highlighted automatically — you don't need to remember which Hijri days are recommended.

Step 5: Review Your Stats

Open the Stats tab to see your streaks, totals by type, and progress over time. Religious and Intermittent logs are shown separately.
